(Food) Red Pig Korean Restaurant 빨간돼지
Thursday, August 15, 2013

This is my second visit to-date. Visited this place before I went korea, as one of my farewell dinners I had with the colleagues.

15 Aug 2013 (Thurs) evening

The side dishes were less than interesting but the meat is awwww-soooo-good. I don't usually enjoy pork especially those that are not marinated. BUT... the pork belly doesn't have the usual pork smell/taste and enjoy chewing on it! Taste even better with the Korean chilli sauce and lettuce.

The red pig signature has very good marinated pork.

The picture shows our meat order. As usual, it is at least 2 servings of meat and Red Pig Korean Restaurant uses Charcoal to bbq the meat (i.e. not electric bbq; its suppose to taste better).
That aside, notice the amount of meat served (per serving) is much more than other restaurant. We ordered one serving of Red Pig Signature (S$20 per serving) and one order of pork belly (was it pork belly I ordered? can't remember.....; but it was at S$15 per serving)

We also ordered at Seafood Pancake (S$18). I didn't really like it because they had wayyyyy too much leek. But my friend enjoyed the pancake a lot.

Red Pig Korean Restaurant

It is along the same stretch with Amoy Street Branch of Wang Dae Bak.

(Food) GRUB at Bishan
Sunday, August 4, 2013

After reading about all the good reviews, we decided to check this place out for my friend's birthday celebration on 3rd August 2013 (Saturday) evening (6.45pm). After finally getting a seat at 8.30pm (which means, almost 2 good hours of wait, loitering around the park) the "No Reservation" rule is now seen as "I have so many customers. You want you come, if you don't, we have nothing to lose".

I think we are pretty irritating to check on our status (how many more tables ahead of us before we get to be seated) every 30minutes. The staff commented that we were very persistent (But that's because it is a friend's birthday and we had after-plans). To be fair, the staff are pretty courteous and helpful during our dining time.

THE PLACE
The place was really cooling and the concept of eating in a garden is a very good selling point for people who wants a change from the usual hunts in shopping malls. A very good laid back concept.

THE FOOD
The food is reasonably priced and I like it that they put in effort in the presentation of the food. I heard this place is opened by people who teach cooking. I had Fish cutlet Burger and it was served with a cup of fries. The fish cutlet was pretty tasty but the bread is kinda dry. Also like it that mayonise and Chilli sauce was served promptly upon request. The ordering of food was prompt (via some tablets) and the waiting time was pretty quick too.

Reviews from my friends who had different orders as me, is that the food is good but not fantastic. Not worth 2 hours wait.

OVERALL
My friend who stays in Bishan commented that he likes the place and that he may visit this place again perhaps in the day time. And I told him, of cos its gonna be nice to chill here during the day and enjoying the garden view. But (assuming the same amount of waiting time) waiting for a seat in the sun will prolly kill all your spirits by the time you get a table.

You can always take reservations and mention that it will be 5minutes holding time (and stick to it strictly). Of course, I acknowledge that there are places in Singapore that doesn't take reservations too and the closest amount of waiting time I have experienced so far is Tim Ho Wan at Plaza Sing. Well, which comes to my conclusion (and we all agreed that) if the waiting hour is 2 hours, we are not coming back anymore. We are here to have a relaxing meal, and as mentioned earlier, all your spirits are killed after 2 hours. I have seen disappointed customers who left the queue unhappily after waiting for so long and not getting a table at 8.30pm.

GRUBS

It is rather far from any nearest MRT station, but understand that there is public transport (i.e. bus) from Bishan MRT station that drops you at the vicinity. For drivers who needs to look for carpark, do note that it is at Bishan Park 1. It is the part of the Park that is behind the golf place (about 15minutes walk) and opposite Gwang Ming Shan Temple.

(Cafe) L'etoile Cafe at Owen Road

After I read about it on cafehopping Singapore's website , I have always wanted to check out this place. But it appears to be in a secluded corner (i.e. inaccessible) which was why it took me a while before I finally put plans into action.

And, the place is surprisingly not that inaccessible. about 7minutes walk from Farrer Park MRT station.

THE PLACE
Nice ambience. Even though the windows were wide open (with curtains) and the weather was scorching hot outside, the interior was pleasantly cooling. It was a peaceful place where patrons appears to be people who enjoy café just like you.  Families and couples alike are spotted on many tables, doing their own reading and ipad-ing. People come here together but they generally don't really communicate with each other. Rather, they had a relaxing afternoon together doing their own stuff at the same table. And this explains why people are not rowdy and less loud in their conversations.

THE FOOD
I read about it at many sites that the food is not that good. True enough. My bagel was so hard I had a battle it out with my knife. My friend's breakfast set was really not that tasty too.
my friend's breakfast

my smoke salmon cream cheese bagel (below S$9) & Iced Mocha (the mocha was not that good too) - S$5.90
A pot of 'Nymph of the Nile' tea - S$5.90
The tea was quite good.

THE MENU

OVERALL
The minus point about the food is not going to keep me away from the place. But I will probably do away with food and enjoy time there over some pot of tea.

THE LOCATION
160 Owen Road, Singapore 218953

Exit D go straight, turn left at first turn (at Owen Road; you will see the road name). Go to end of street. The café is at the corner on your right hand side, about 3 - 4 minutes stroll.
